Joss Whedon finally explains the fight scene in The Avengers. When I first saw the trailer I assumed it was a skrull or possibly like a danger room like environment but finally we get to hear it from Joss himself.
I can only assume they are fighting in a Danger Room like environment and are not actually trying to kill each other.
